Letting Go: A Mother’s Struggle with Sending Her Kids Off to College

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Ushering of a New Era

It is a new dawn. A new and unfamiliar era in my parenting journey. Sending my baby girl off to college was one of the hardest things I had to do. It was hard to let go after holding on so tight for so many years. We talked about college since elementary school, so I knew this day was coming. We celebrated graduating from high school, but nothing prepares you for that actual moment. When the big day arrived, we packed her up, made the long drive and I set up her room— not necessarily the way she wanted but that was my last piece of control. Then you say goodbye, drive home and you realize that you left your baby in a strange place by herself. You are hit with the realization that she is an adult who must function on her own in the real world.

It is a lot to take. My brain goes into overdrive… and the mommy thoughts ensue…is she prepared? Is she eating? What about drugs, drinking and safe sex? Did we provide enough information, was she listening when her dad and I were talking?

Then it hit me, we had several open conversations, I taught her right from wrong. I taught her to treat everyone with dignity and respect, to be a good citizen to her community—and above all to love her self for who she is. Don’t try to fit in with the crowd, instead stand out among the crowd.

Knowing who she is helped me get through the difficult transition. Communication is also the key. She knew before going off to college we will check in with her daily. Just a simple hello I’m ok for my husband and me. Since she’s a cheerleader she travels often to games and a text at every destination to say “I’m here” is all we asked.

She complies with every demand and it made the transition so much easier for all of us.
Know your kids, don’t wait to have honest conversations with your kids, and set acceptable boundaries with your children, if they are following all the rules that’s set, they will communicate so much more.
